Help build the payment infrastructure and applied AI behind CONVRT’s next chapter.
Payments experience. Engineering ownership.
Explore two complementary backend engineering roles, both grounded in payments and applied AI.
Our development headquarters is in Sofia, Bulgaria. Being based in Sofia is a strong advantage; other locations and working arrangements remain open based on experience. Compensation will be discussed based on experience and role scope.
Send your CV and a short note about your experience to careers@convrtpayments.com. Please name the role you’re interested in. Final employment details will be discussed during the recruitment process.

PAYMENT INFRASTRUCTURESenior Backend Engineer — Payment Gateway & AI
Own the backend foundations that connect merchants, payment providers and CONVRT’s planned AI capabilities. You’ll bring experience operating payment systems in production and translate that experience into dependable APIs, accurate transaction state and clear operational tools.
What you’ll work on
- Design and maintain gateway APIs, provider integrations and asynchronous payment event processing.
- Handle retries, duplicate messages, timeouts and out-of-order events without creating duplicate operations or misleading transaction status.
- Build data and service boundaries that keep one merchant’s information separate from another’s.
- Expose permission-checked services for AI-assisted reporting and proposal workflows; keep payment execution behind deterministic application controls.
- Improve monitoring, reconciliation, incident response, automated tests and documentation with the engineering team.
What you’ll bring
- Hands-on backend ownership of a payment gateway, processor, PSP or comparable payment platform in production; explain your personal contribution.
- Strong API, relational database, distributed-system and automated-testing skills in at least one production backend language.
- Practical understanding of payment authorization, capture, refunds, webhooks and transaction reconciliation, including ambiguous and failed states.
- Experience implementing authentication, authorization, secrets management and sensitive-data controls with security/compliance partners.
- Experience integrating an LLM-backed capability into backend services, or a substantial implementation demonstrating tool access, validation and evaluation beyond a chat demo.
- Ability to explain technical trade-offs, incidents and operational risks clearly to nontechnical colleagues.
Helpful, but not essential
- Direct acquiring connections, multiple payment providers, local payment methods or cross-border payment operations.
- Experience working within a PCI DSS-scoped environment and reducing unnecessary exposure to card data.
- Load testing, deployment automation, observability and controlled rollout practices.
Tell us about your work
Describe a payment system you helped operate, a failure you investigated and how you verified the fix. Include an AI-enabled backend example and the controls around it. Public code is welcome but not required; do not share confidential employer material.

APPLIED AI / PAYMENTSSenior Backend Engineer — AI & Agent Orchestration
Build the backend services behind CONVRT’s planned Agentic Orchestration experience. Start with permission-scoped payment intelligence and proposals for human review, then help implement deliberately bounded configuration workflows as capabilities develop.
What you’ll work on
- Build LLM integrations that use approved tools and validated inputs to query permitted payment data and produce grounded answers.
- Implement account isolation, scoped permissions, human approval, grant expiry, revocation and auditable agent actions in application code.
- Build evaluations for incorrect answers, unauthorized access, malicious instructions and unreliable tool responses.
- Use bounded retries, timeouts, fallback behavior and monitoring to manage service reliability, latency and model cost.
- Partner with payment engineers to define accurate metrics and reporting windows; make uncertainty and missing data visible.
- Preserve the planned authority boundary: agent access to gateway configuration must not extend to refunds, voids, captures, payouts or bank-detail changes.
What you’ll bring
- Strong production backend engineering experience with APIs, databases, testing and operational ownership.
- Hands-on development of LLM applications using tools/function calls, structured outputs and repeatable evaluations; distinguish what you shipped from what you prototyped.
- Payment gateway, processor or PSP integration experience, with a practical understanding of payment states, reporting and merchant data boundaries.
- Ability to enforce permissions independently of the model’s instructions and handle untrusted input without treating it as authorization.
- Experience investigating failures and monitoring backend behavior after deployment.
- Ability to communicate limitations clearly and work with product, security and payment operations colleagues.
Helpful, but not essential
- Production agent workflows with approval, expiry, revocation and traceable tool execution.
- Permission-aware retrieval, evaluation datasets or model-provider migration experience.
- Experience with payment reporting, multilingual interfaces or multiple markets.
Tell us about your work
Describe an AI-backed service you built, the backend decisions you owned and how you measured its behavior. Explain your payment integration experience and one example where a model or tool failed safely.
